In 2012, the state of California became the first in the U.S. to formally recognize that access to safe, clean and affordable water is a fundamental human right. Unfortunately, some seven years later, due to poor California water quality, many of its residents are denied that right. It looks pristine to the naked eye, but contaminants are a fact of life for most of California’s lakes, streams and rivers More than 300 of the states’ approximately 2,800 water providers offer tap water that is out of compliance with federal standards, affecting at least a million Californians each year.
